The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
