Jair Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
