Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
