The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
